Overview of Motors And Their Use in Fans

Motor is a popular mechanical device that is used in almost all machineries whether they are for industrial purpose or domestic. This article gives a short introduction of motors as mechanical devices and their types along with a brief overview of how motors are used in various mechanical equipments particularly in fans.

One of the most popular mechanical devices is a motor which converts any form of energy into mechanical energy which is then used to perform mechanical operations. A shaft is connected to motor which rotates as the motor converts given energy into mechanical energy. To the shaft is connected any desired device which gives the intended output.

Although there are a large variety of motors available but ones that are commonly used are electric motors, hydraulic motors and pneumatic motors. Electric motors are further classified as AC motors and DC motors which comes from the type of current supplied to them; when a motor runs on alternating current it is called AC motor and it is termed as DC motor when it runs on direct current electricity.

Pneumatic motors are powered by compressed air. When compressed air is supplied to a pneumatic motor, the air expands allowing motor to perform work which it does either by producing linear or rotary motion.

A hydraulic motor converts flow and pressure into rotation and torque which is utilized as required.

Conceptually, all motors are interchangeable with their respective type of generators like pneumatic and electric motors can be driven backwards working as a generator. Hydraulic motor, however, is not convertible into a generator since it can’t be to drive backwards.

Motors are used in various modern-day devices ranging from automobiles, household appliances, toys etc. In all these appliances the end result is mechanical work which is utilized in performing respective operations.

As far fans are concerned, they comprise of electric motors that, when energized, rotate the shaft attached to it. Shaft is further attached to fan blades that rotate as the shaft rotates, thereby, producing air flow.

With new developments in today’s era compact appliances and equipments are produced that require smaller components. For such reasons and to keep up with advancements compact motors are used that are as small as a few centimeters.

Take an example of fans that are common household appliance. We all have seen the ordinary fans and are well aware of their dimensions but even these fans have now been produced in smaller portable sizes that are operated on batteries with compact motor inside the housing.
